Meet the CrossFit Coaches


When we founded IronFire Athletics, Home of CrossFit Poway, we set out to cultivate a community of strong, like-minded people who are constantly striving for progress and to provide them with the best coaches, a spacious facility and all of the tools they need to become the best version of themselves. We consider ourselves to always be in a perpetual state of progress, but we're pretty sure we have the coaching staff we always dreamed of having! 

  • Jason Dunbar

    Co-owner, Director of Training

    Jason Dunbar is the Co-owner and Director of Training here at IronFire Athletics. Jason’s start in the fitness industry began in 2002 at Brand X Ramona by way of Krav Maga, Chinese Kenpo, and competitive Karate training. In preparation for an upcoming tournament, his instructor introduced Jason to a new fitness methodology called CrossFit which immediately exposed holes in his strength and metabolic conditioning. Humbled and hooked, Jason knew CrossFit training would be a part of his life for a very long time. In 2004, Jason became one of Brand X’s first CrossFit trainers, and soon thereafter was awarded the CrossFit L-2 designation. In 2007, Jason founded CrossFit Poway in his home’s garage which they quickly outgrew. In 2008, he competed in the CrossFit Games.  In 2010 Jason and his community moved into its current location which has since expanded its square footage to the 4500 sq ft facility you see today.

    Today, Jason is a butt kickin’ Chinese Kenpo black belt who owns the best CrossFit gym in our region. He specializes in strength training and is passionate about helping his members push past their mental barriers.

  • Alfia Dunbar

    Co-owner, Director of Youth Programs & Trainer

    Alfia Dunbar is the Co-owner, Director of Youth Programs and a trainer here at IronFire Athletics. She specializes in youth sports performance and is our resident pregnancy fitness expert. Coach Alfia was first introduced to CrossFit by her then boyfriend, now hubby, Coach Jason. Although, it wasn’t quite love at first sight (her love of CrossFit, that is. Jason was a shoe-in.)

    “I danced my entire childhood into early adulthood and I was on swim team in high school. I was pretty sure I wasn’t the ‘CrossFit’ type. In fact, I was terrified of it. I eventually caught the bug and really found my true passion and talent is developing children who love the fit life, empowering women through weight training, and coaching all of our members through milestones of strength and mental toughness.”

  • Kurt Markley


    Kurt Markley is a trainer here at IronFire Athletics. Coach Kurt has been CrossFitting for 7 years and specializes in barbell movements.

    “I love working with our members and seeing things really click for them. Seeing their excitement after hitting a new PR, a new movement, or just attempting something they were too afraid to try before is what drives me to be a better trainer every day.”

    In addition to being a CrossFit diehard, Coach Kurt is also an avid soccer player, surfer, hiker, traveler . . . the list goes on and on. He’s basically an all around adventure seeking, outdoorsy kind of guy who is passionate about helping people succeed.

  • Greg Familia


    Greg Familia is a trainer here at IronFire Athletics. Coach Greg is our resident strongman which means he specializes in lifting heaving things up and putting them down. If you’re looking to develop raw strength, Coach Greg is your guy.

  • Vanessa Coleman


    Vanessa Coleman is a trainer here at IronFire Athletics. Coach Vanessa specializes in coaching members though the fitness is a journey. “The journey is about wellness, personal development, and growth – not just about losing weight. Being a good trainer is much more than teaching people about how to move properly. It’s about motivating them to come back every day with a smile on their face. It’s also about helping people see their successes when they may not see them on their own.”

    When Coach Vanessa isn’t at the gym, she’s at home playing super mom to her 3 awesome kids. Go Vanessa!

  • Kensi Walters

    Trainer (Kids & Advanced Kids Programs)

    Kensi Walters is the Kids and Advanced Kids Trainer here at IronFire Athletics. Coach Kensi specializes in bringing out energy and excitement to learn from the young athletes she works with.

    She is also an accomplished pole vaulter and aspires to own her own pole vault gym one day.
